Button battery consultation
The ACCC formed a taskforce to investigate the safety of button batteries and products that contain them.
As part of this investigation, the ACCC sought information from stakeholders to understand the extent of any market failure in the supply of button battery consumer products. They also considered whether regulation under the Australian Consumer Law is needed to address their hazards.
As part of this process, the ACCC released the button battery safety issues paper for consultation.
The issues paper contained a broad discussion on button batteries including:
- what they are
- the dangers they pose
- current efforts to manage button battery safety
- potential approaches to deal with the hazard.
The issues paper also included a series of questions that the ACCC considered as part of their investigation. Responses were used to inform a cost benefit analysis and any draft recommendations.
